How Digital Marketing Will Be Relevant to my future Career

My time at Douglas College in Digital Marketing has already been useful in my career, and will continue to be in the opportunities I take on in the future.

Before coming back to Douglas College last year, I had already been using my marketing education to enrich my roofing sales roles at the time. Although I had no control over any company material, I often put together custom promotional packages from existing materials, tailored to the needs of a prospect, rather than relying on the default package I was shown during training. Other times, with my superior’s permission, I would pitch our services to larger construction projects that we would normally not target, using material and pitches customized to their current work project and potential needs. Both methods were successful, and relied on my knowledge in promotion, advertising, and some of the sales course I took at Douglas College. However, I am looking to move into a real marketing role in my future.

Besides my Marketing Studies, the marketing skill I am most eager to learn is promoting myself. Although I am seeking employment in a company, as I would like to work in a team, freelancing has always been both my fallback, but also an opportunity to build myself in that space. Even as part of a team, I’m hoping that building my personal brand will allow me to stand out as an individual, and allow me to consciously work on my own Marketing and Graphic Design style.

I came across this Ted Talk last year, when I was doing some research, and I feel it is appropriate here, as it is one of the reasons I decided to do a personal website for the WordPress assignment. For the time being, the website is a portfolio, and will serve as an accompaniment to my resume, but I do intend to expand it to better show my personal brand.
